According to a 2010 study, there are more than 1300 yacht clubs in the United States and almost 500,000 boat owners.

Traveling on a boat is not only more relaxing than driving a car, but safer as well. Additionally, you can customize your boat in any way you want and even add pirate flags for boats to make your watercraft look more attractive!

A pirate flag can be purchased at an affordable price and it will make your boat look unique. There are literally hundreds of types of flags to choose from, according to your preferences!

In fact, if you fancy the idea of getting a pirate flag for your boat, keep reading to find out your options and how to buy a nice one!

Tips for Buying Pirate Flags for Boats

The first thing you need to do is to set up a budget.

Pirate flags aren’t expensive, but depending on their size, design, and material, the price can increase or decrease accordingly. For example, some flags can be bought for under $50 while others can cost several hundred dollars.

Here are a few tips to remember when buying pirate flags for boats:

1. Consider The Size

A huge flag on a tiny ship would look funny and even reduce visibility while navigating.

Similarly, a tiny flag on a large powerboat can undermine the elegance of the watercraft.

There are a few regulations and guidelines when it comes to buying pirate flags and you should take these into account before purchasing. For example, a ship under 20 feet in length would do well with a flag measuring around 10-12 by 16-18 inches.

On the other hand, if your watercraft is 100 feet long or more, the appropriate flag size would be about 3 by 5 feet.

Although these are the general guidelines, it’s ok to come up with your own ideas. Just stand back, look at your ship and picture the ideal flag size for it and how it will look from afar. Then come up with a few rough measurements and you’ll eventually make a correct decision when it comes to the size of the flag.

2. Consider the Design

This is the most entertaining part of buying a pirate flag for your boat!

Again, remember that you have endless options at your disposal. You can buy flags with skulls, pirates with eye-patches, flags with crossed swords, color flags, black and white flags, flags with skeletons, etc.

The best way to find a good flag for your needs is to see a lot of designs and models. For example, female boat owners might prefer a flag with a pink skull, rather than a white one.

The design of the flag also refers to its shape. For example, some flags are rectangular, others are triangular, others have a double tail, etc. Triangular flags are commonly known as boat pennants. Use your imagination and your intuition to find out which type of flag is more appropriate for your boat.

3. Consider the Material

Pirate flags for boats can be made from different materials.

Some of the most common ones include polyester, nylon, plastic, textile materials, and even metal.

The good thing is that all these flags have been designed and specially treated to be weather resistant. This means that no amount of wind, rainfall or dust can damage the beautiful design of the flag, at least not for a couple of years.

At the same time, some flags are UV resistant. This means that the ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun will not make the flag look faded, so the vivid colors of the flag will remain the same for years.

If you’re like most people, you’ll probably go for nylon or polyester flags which are resistant and lightweight. A lightweight flag means that it will be easy to install and it will also gracefully move in the wind, just like the American flag on the Moon!

Metallic flags are also cool, yet they might be more expensive and harder to install. These don’t move in the wind, but because they are made of metal, they can last for a lifetime.

4. Consider the Mounting Options

This is another important thing to consider when buying pontoon boat flags.

Most of them come with grommets which are basically two small holes in the fabric of the flag surrounded by a metallic ring.

You insert a rope through these grommets and you can raise or lower the flag on your ship according to your preferences and needs. At the same time, some flags come with a pole which needs to be inserted somewhere in the floor of your ship.

Consider your needs and come up with the right mounting option. Do you prefer grommets or poles? Most people choose grommets, but you’ll be the judge on this one.

5. Go for A Custom Flag

Believe it or not, you can also create customized pirate flags for boats, just as you can create custom t-shirts for various occasions.

There are companies which help you come up with a personalized design. For example, you can choose the length of the flag, the material, mounting type, color theme and whether it should be UV resistant or not. You can even go for a Confederate flag if you want!

If you have a particular design or image in mind (for example, a picture with Popeye the Sailor), you can provide that to the guys who create custom flags and they will print it on your pirate flag.

You can also add interesting messages, sayings or pieces of text which will make your flag stand out of the crowd. You just have to avoid profanity or racial messages, but other than that, you have endless freedom when it comes to designing pirate flags for boats.
