Mike Leach was a two-time national coach of the year in NCAA Division football where he last coached for Mississippi State from 2020 until his death in 2022. While Mississippi state has a bulldog mascot Leach was referred to as The Pirate and had a penchant for pirate flags and swords. His love of pirates inspired his inspirational game day speech where he waved a pirate sword around and used the phrase “swing your sword” which would later go on to be the name of his autobiography. In honor of their late coach Mississippi State wore pirate themed helmets during the ReliaQuest Bowl which was fittingly held in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium complete with a pirate ship inside the stadium.   Leach was an innovator in the sport of football and called his signature style offense of never running the ball an Air Raid. His unconventional coaching career would change the way college football was ultimately played as this true pirate was never scared to steer his ship into uncharted waters.
