FLAG HISTORY & SYMBOLISM
The old South African flag, adopted in 1928, was based on the Dutch Prince’s Flag (orange, white, and blue stripes) — giving rise to its Afrikaans nickname Oranje, Blanje, Blou ("orange, white, blue"). Centered on the flag are three smaller flags representing the nations that shaped South Africa’s history: the United Kingdom, the Orange Free State, and the South African Republic (Transvaal).
The flag was also used in South-West Africa (now Namibia) during the period of South African administration. It remained the official national flag until the end of apartheid and the democratic transition in 1994, when it was replaced by the current rainbow flag.

- Dye Process: Aniline dye saturation for deep, vibrant color with superior wash-fastness and light-fastness
- Finishing: 1-inch double-edge perimeter fold with four rows of lock-stitching on the fly edge; 1½-inch reinforced stitching at fly corners
- Hardware: Solid brass grommets (standard sizes) or rope-and-thimble (8x12 ft and larger)
