Later, in 1821, the country achieved its independence, but it came at a cost: the country was ruled by a slave owner and tyrant. In 1844, the Dominicans revolted and, after a number of years of conflict, eventually created their own democratic nation.
The flag of the Dominican Republic features a large, centered white cross with four squares, two blue and two red. The center emblem features six similar flags, a bible, a golden cross, an olive branch, a palm branch, and the motto of the country in Latin: 'God, Country, Freedom'.
